In 2008, the Texans didn't lose one starting lineman for one play because of an injury. In 2009, they lost both starting guards—Chester Pitts and Mike Brisiel—early in the season.
Without Pitts and Brisiel, the Texans left themselves with inexperienced backups. Kasey Studdard, a former sixth-round pick, had never started and had played sparingly. He replaced Pitts, an original Texan who never missed a start until blowing out his knee.
Chris White, a fifth-year journeyman, replaced Brisiel at right guard. Competing with him and getting playing time down the stretch was rookie Antoine Caldwell, a third-round pick who had been drafted to play center.
As a result, the Texans struggled to run the ball.
